Fedora Feather

Tired of manually adding support for mp3, dvd and Java to your fresh Fedora installs? This script will automatically do all of that.

Pimp your Fedora with Fedora Feather.

Complete list of what Fedora Feather can do for you:

  • Install mp3 support for your favorite player.
  • Install dvd support.
  • Install Sun’s Java Runtime Environment.
  • Install Adobe’s Flash plugin.
  • Install the Microsoft TrueType fonts.
  • Almost anything else you want it to. Tell me in the comments the other programs you would like to see included.

Download Fedora Feather here.

Updated 01 Jan 2008. Download it here.

    Sorry Syam, your comment was flagged as spam. What options did you check when you ran it?

  3. Thanks! That worked perfectly on my test install of Fedora 7. I was beginning to get a little frustrated, as all the “official” information sources are very coy when it comes to adding MP3 support. Sorry, but it just isn’t possible to run a modern os without MP3 support, no matter how encumbered it is with annoying licenses.

    @Sergio
    Thanks for the link. I’m glad it worked for you!

    @gavin
    I need a little more info. What did you choose to install when you got this message?

  8. After running Feather, a dialog box should appear, allowing you to select which package(s) to install. It sounds like the dialog box didn’t show up and thus you didn’t get to select the packages.

    I haven’t even installed 8 yet. Let me install it in a VM, and I’ll update the script.

    Sorry, I guess I should have included some info on how to use it.
    Just download, extract and double-click. When prompted, click run in terminal. It will ask for your root password, and open a window which allows you to select which functionality to add. Make your selections and click OK.
    Then wait. It actually goes out and downloads the packages you need, so it can take a while.
    BTW, while I’m told that there are no problems, I haven’t personally tested this on Fedora 8 yet, so I can’t guarantee that it will work.

    Thank You! I am using F7 at this point. I know you have heard this before, but I will say it again. I am new to Linux, because I hate Windows. Yes I still use Windows because I have to. But in my spare time I have been playing around with Linux. I hope to get pretty good with it one day. I’m just use to those easy point and click installation programs for Windows.

    I have been trying to install Java for while now. It seems I could never get it right. Anyway, your step by step procedure did the trick. Thanks for the help and the script to do all the work.

    Glad it worked for you. :-)
    Stick with it. Linux can be a bear to get used to, especially if your only computing experience is with Windows. I was lucky. My first computer came with Windows 3.11, but a friend put Slackware on it after about 6 months. A year later, I knew way more about Linux than I did Windows. You might want to check out my 10 Commandments article: http://linuxbraindump.org/2007/08/13/the-10-commandments-for-new-linux-users/

    It sounds a little preachy, though it’s not meant to. It’s just some things I wish someone had told me when I was new to it.

    Thanks for the script. I have done this procedure MANY times for myself, work computers, and the 50 or so GNU/Linux computers at my childrens’ school. Even though it isn’t THAT hard to do by hand, it is tedious. Would you be OK with taking patches to add other options if I come up with any next time we upgrade?
