mkdir -r /home/bob/letters/sales
sorry mkdir -p not -r
mkdir /home/bob/letters /home/bob/letters/sales
mkdir -p /home/bob/letters/sales
The -p option to mkdir supplies the missing parent but you will need correct permissions.
